Kids are being conditioned to expect that their private affairs will be surveilled and held against them -- by universities, parents, future employers... everyone. That's ultimately more troubling than anything related to this specific incidenthttps://twitter.com/mtracey/status/1140614666399473665 …

The US has never been safer, but parents have seemingly never been more paranoid about surveilling every aspect of their kids' lives under the guise of "safety" -- when there's really no threat to speak of. The same invasive, privacy-destroying mindset afflicts elite institutions

I just can't be moved to cry over the oppression of the upper middle and upper classes.

If you think this just applies to the upper classes you've got your head in the clouds, this stuff doesn't so much trickle down as it all but starts at the bottom.

Knowing that kids are more susceptible to making bad choices, or being naive for lack of life experience, I see no problem monitoring a child's digital life.

I can understand monitoring movements of your child, like maybe an ankle monitor or in the shoe or something. But probably not when they get older and definitely not for snooping on your kids private conversations.

Remember, the politics part matters here. Had he been David Hogg he could have said anything he wanted. Also, statements that are otherwise offensive, are safe so long as they target the right class of people. If he had said "kill all white people or this white person" that's ok.

True, yet there are many kids who surreptitiously chat with real weirdos online who eventually harm them. It happens and I would be aware of this if my kids were of that age today.

That’s actually good parenting. Teens don’t have “private” communications.

It's actually terrible parenting- why shouldn't teens be allowed some basic privacy?

My granddaughter has her phone & tablets checked every night. Even I can trace her whereabouts. Initially thought it was too much, but it's just safety
