Why should the US be involved in policing maritime commerce on the other side of the world in the first place? Nobody even second-guesses this implicit premise. But such is the case when the arrogant assumptions of US imperium go unexamined for so long

@JimJatras It may seem redundant today, but US 'securing' shipping/commerce has been backbone of its post WWII extended deterrence 'world order' role 'securing' globalization. If US cedes this role on paper, then it cedes its unipolar rank. Death pangs of imperium?

Imperium, indeed. Chomsky has been right all along. Britannia ruled the waves--now we do. It's Hegemony or Survival. We need a prominent critical voice. All we have now is Tucker.

Dear @SecPompeo/@StateDept, why is the United States taking the lead in the response to an incident involving a ship owned by Japanese company, flagged in Panama, carrying cargo owned by a company based in Singapore?

Though this is on the other side of the world, disruption of commerce impacts the US. The world’s energy passes through here and also the products we sell to the rest of the world. We may be energy independent, but other countries are not.
