Bernie is avowedly a socialist and Warren is avowedly a capitalist. It's funny that they both get conflated under the same vague banner of "progressive" -- as if socialism vs. capitalism is not a meaningful distinction

Maybe in practice their governance would be similar. But at least rhetorically, that's a massive gulf. I mean, how much more foundational of a difference could you ask for?

"Bernie is not a socialist," some tweeters claim. Well, he just delivered a major speech today once again declaring himself a socialist. So I'm just going by how he self-describes

“Maybe in practice their governance would be similar.” completely nullifies the entire premise of this exercise, no?

I have never heard him explain what he means by socialism or how he proposes to bring it about. Medicare for all, free tuition, supporting Unions raising min wage, wealth taxes and reform of Wall Street etc. are not socialism. They are reforms of the existing capitalist system.

This is so revealing. Rhetoric is all that matters to you, because to you, everything is an abstraction, and a chance for you to preen (or, “be rhetorical”). Just as when you complain about talk of norms being “boring.” You’re a schlubby Milo. “In practice” means “in reality.”

The term progressive is ill-defined. The root word is progress, but progress toward what? To some on the Left, the goals of progressivism look a lot like communism. Communism is NOT progress. They seem to think progress is having a massive state in charge of all major industries.

Most people are more interested in governance than the rhetorical gulf. Is rhetoric really a meaningful foundational difference?

Saying their governance would be similar is tantamount to calling at least one of them, if not both, massive frauds. - Which one is the bigger fraud Mikey?
