Maybe in practice their governance would be similar. But at least rhetorically, that's a massive gulf. I mean, how much more foundational of a difference could you ask for?

"Bernie is not a socialist," some tweeters claim. Well, he just delivered a major speech today once again declaring himself a socialist. So I'm just going by how he self-describes

The Democrats are in complete disarray. They do not stand for anything other than bullshitting and corruption.

Wait, since when has Warren ever acted like or advocated for anything remotely capitalist?

I don't know if I'd call Bernie a "Socialist". I think
@matthewstoller and Chomsky are both correct in describing Bernie as more of a New Deal Democrat rather than a "Socialist". The thing is, being a New Deal Democrat in the current political context sounds like a radical thing.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

I think your framing of the issue as "avowedly" creates the confusion. In practice, the gulf isn't that wide.

Socialism vs. Capitalism is a meaningful distinction, but Sanders isn't a Socialist. He's an avowed Social Democrat. But that label is essentially meaningless. Sanders is a Capitalist, who in his personal life has made himself wealthy by following the capitalist playbook.

If leftist is poor: attack him because he's a failure and envious. If a leftist is well off: attack him because he's a hypocrite. Truth: we live in a capitalist system and have to make our ways as best we can.

The problem is he's being honest and she is not. She wants to redefine "Capitalist" to HER standards.

Few are straight up classic public ownership of the means of production types anymore. They learned that hyper-regulation gets you control and the space to claim that any problems are due to lack of more regulation, which of course only they can provide.

I am a human and Rex is a dog. Yet, in the great battle of animals vs robots, the relevant classification for me and my dog is "animal." It's not that, in that context, the "human" vs "dog" distinction has no meaning. Rather, that distinction just isn't the one worth focusing on.

The key difference is their relation to the socialist tradition. Bernie is unashamedly a part of it. Warren is not, though I think she is being drawn into it.

They will label their policies according to how it will lay with their base and potential voters. They both believe in a big government and both agree on gov't running businesses, Bernie more than Warren.

I'm honestly tired of people trying to describe disingenuous politicians in terms that might define a literary movement. Warren has shown that she will compromise with the DNC. That means she is the DNC; a centrist in name only that is really a Republican.

Only in the Beltway does it. Progressive means forward moving while capitalism is the father of the welfare state.

Bernie doesn't believe in the social ownership of the means of production, hardly anyone does. He's a social democrat who believes in reforming capitalism.
-
yes he does believe in worker ownership
