This was exactly my reaction. "Strange" is a positive quality if your "strangeness" empowers you to challenge the status quo, act out of conviction rather than political calculation, and not succumb to the pressures of amoral careerism https://twitter.com/KimIversenShow/status/1138629067282870272 …

This article is a case study in why a lot of Hindus are becoming increasingly skeptical of the Liberal Establishment: the constant proejctions of Otherness on us, the skepticism of our guru tradition and the implication that we are right-wingers. This piece made me like her more.

I'm not even sure what I think after reading that article. It was (I don't know if intentionally) a mind bending & emotional roller coaster sort of experience. Manipulative? Maybe. But if so, it was done in a way I'm not very familiar with. @KimIversenShow

The author is very perceptive and even empathetic in the piece, and ultimately draws positive conclusions about Tulsi -- while also scorning her critics. If Tulsi's atypical background is going to be elucidated, better for it to be done within the context of that framing.

I guess it was empathetic. It also seemed intended to strike fear in the hearts of readers (about cults). I will need to read it again. The first time I found myself distracted throughout, somewhat defensively wondering what the game was. Mainly because of the opening graf.

Here's an experiment: try having someone who's not very familiar with Tulsi and her policies read the article and gauge that person's reaction. My thought is the article is intended for that audience -- producing confusion, skepticism, distrust about Tulsi.

You haven't noticed hinduphobic innuendo? It is clearly a hit piece which is to scare average American about her "far East Hindu religion"https://link.medium.com/9DNuv3HguX

"and has racked up unwelcome support from Steve Bannon, Richard Spencer, and David Duke" Why even mention that? Is this anything other than utterly irrelevant? If it is, the writer doesn't explain why & by mentioning it the writer plants seeds, even if she includes "unwelcome".
