This is the first appropriately probing, but perceptive and empathetic profile of Tulsi Gabbard that has been published in the mainstream press. Most coverage of her has just been awful. No surprise that @KerryHowley provides the one exceptionhttp://nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/06/tulsi-gabbard-2020-presidential-campaign.html …

Thanks. What about: -Problematizing her Hindu identity as "professed" or that her guru wanted to mainstream their faith by closeness to Modi? -Theorizing that Tulsi volunteered to serve after 9/11 due to Islamophobia or to get away from her "cult?"
@KerryHowley knows better. -
- I don't see the word "professed" as necessarily problematizing. One "professes" a religious faith - Howley ends up *lauding* Tulsi's independence of mind, as a product of her atypical upbringing, and scorning critics who would reduce her to a "brainwashed" caricature

A lot of non-flattering framing in this article, with little explanation of her actual *arguments*: eg, it mentions 'Assad' 10 times but has only 1 short sentence about Gabbard's *reason* for meeting with Assad. This is an important matter & a serious accusation, which makes it surprising the article does so little to explore it in more detail, eg by 1) making explicit the connections between teachings & TG's views, 2) explaining why people think she is under Butler's influencepic.twitter.com/k17JfgDuH1
