This is the first appropriately probing, but perceptive and empathetic profile of Tulsi Gabbard that has been published in the mainstream press. Most coverage of her has just been awful. No surprise that @KerryHowley provides the one exceptionhttp://nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/06/tulsi-gabbard-2020-presidential-campaign.html …

One thing I lightly disagree with: "There is no cohesive ideology that explains the idiosyncratic political positioning." It's true: Tulsi transcends typical partisan boundaries. But that doesn't mean she lacks a cohesive political outlook. Just requires extra effort to discern

Tulsi does have an atypical personal background and political trajectory. If anyone is going to explore her biography, better for it to be someone like Howley, who has the acuity to discuss it in way that isn't reflexively judgmental. Ultimately, Howley's conclusions are positive

I see some Tulsi supporters are upset about the piece. I can understand why. But if you're a presidential candidate, you have to expect that your background is going to be scrutinized. And this was about as fair a scrutinization as you're going to get from the mainstream press

Michael, I didn't see this as a sympathetic piece at all, more an attack piece written in poetic cadence. Same in the end. See the tweet (hopefully still directly below this) where Lil'Mickey calls everyone around her part of a cult and claims its disqualifying.

The piece also claims she hails from Hawaii, but she was born in Am Samoa. semantics?

The confines of mainstream politics is a straitjacket for the mind. Push the Overton Window left. Former Sen.

Also, was fully God and fully human, born of a virgin, raised the dead, ascended bodily into Heaven, cured incurable diseases, changed water to wine, transformed a few loaves of bread and fish into enough to feed thousands, conversed with and cast out demons...

But Hare Krishnas are only known to most Americans as the loonies who harass you at the airport. (The movie “Miami Blues” had the best take ever on Hare Krishnas, imo.)

It's all part of a concerted effort to make Tulsi appear strange, 'alien'-outside the norm. They try to marry her anti-war views with snide accusations of cultism-as if being anti-war were 'weird' or 'strange'.

Dude. This profile says she is constantly surrounded by genuine cultists, including her husband, while campaigning for president. That is objectively real, real weird and 100% disqualifying in the eyes of most normal Americans.

Yr losing me here Tracey. The only people who make these ridiculous equivalencies between cults run by traumatizing narcissists and religions are people who have never been anywhere near the former.
