This is the first appropriately probing, but perceptive and empathetic profile of Tulsi Gabbard that has been published in the mainstream press. Most coverage of her has just been awful. No surprise that @KerryHowley provides the one exceptionhttp://nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/06/tulsi-gabbard-2020-presidential-campaign.html …

What's deemed "strange" per the confines of mainstream US politics is also worth considering. Lots of people find the claim that an ancient Galilean rose from the dead and will return to rule over Earth rather "strange." Perhaps even stranger than belonging to a Hare Krishna sect

One thing I lightly disagree with: "There is no cohesive ideology that explains the idiosyncratic political positioning." It's true: Tulsi transcends typical partisan boundaries. But that doesn't mean she lacks a cohesive political outlook. Just requires extra effort to discern

Tulsi does have an atypical personal background and political trajectory. If anyone is going to explore her biography, better for it to be someone like Howley, who has the acuity to discuss it in way that isn't reflexively judgmental. Ultimately, Howley's conclusions are positive

I see some Tulsi supporters are upset about the piece. I can understand why. But if you're a presidential candidate, you have to expect that your background is going to be scrutinized. And this was about as fair a scrutinization as you're going to get from the mainstream press

True. She prefers to operate from the assumptions of the Bush administration.

I listened to her for 3 hours on Rogan. Nothing but platitudes. Perhaps her philosophy is more palatable than some candidates, but she couldn’t even begin to answer basic policy questions. Once you get past her refreshing anti-war stance there doesn’t seem to be anything there.

As a Trump voter/supporter, I'm intrigued with Tulsi's platform, except for the global warming alarmism. Both parties fear her candidacy, especially the neo-con/neo-lib wings.

that's the problem though, it's fine being anti-war because you've seen the horrors of it, but there are other policy areas she won't get personal experience in and an ideology is needed to guide those decisions. What's hers?

Good observation and it could be due to her spiritual base versus secular humanist views

I just heard you and Glenn Greenwald praise Fox news for arriving at the *right* conclusions despite utilizing poor methodology. Good thing those goalposts are mobile!

I don’t find Tulsi’s positions strange at all. They’re all common sense IMO and make perfect sense when she explains them. But her having connections to any sort of cult or nefarious spiritual leader is super worrying. I’m a huge fan of hers but this has concerned me a bit.

She's more genuine than the rest of them put together.
