Yeah, Tulsi had a "strange" upbringing in the sense that it bears little relation to how most Americans are brought up. But that imbued her with a set of experiences which have enabled her to resist mainstream conventional wisdom, and forge a genuinely independent trajectory

She doesn't operate from the same philosophical premises as typical left/liberals, even if she often arrives at the same policy prescriptions as they do. This results in a combination of fury -- largely from fellow Dems -- and intrigue. The idiosyncrasy is central to her appeal

What's deemed "strange" per the confines of mainstream US politics is also worth considering. Lots of people find the claim that an ancient Galilean rose from the dead and will return to rule over Earth rather "strange." Perhaps even stranger than belonging to a Hare Krishna sect

One thing I lightly disagree with: "There is no cohesive ideology that explains the idiosyncratic political positioning." It's true: Tulsi transcends typical partisan boundaries. But that doesn't mean she lacks a cohesive political outlook. Just requires extra effort to discern

Tulsi does have an atypical personal background and political trajectory. If anyone is going to explore her biography, better for it to be someone like Howley, who has the acuity to discuss it in way that isn't reflexively judgmental. Ultimately, Howley's conclusions are positive

I see some Tulsi supporters are upset about the piece. I can understand why. But if you're a presidential candidate, you have to expect that your background is going to be scrutinized. And this was about as fair a scrutinization as you're going to get from the mainstream press

I disagree. This is an awful piece full of racist tropes in fancy dress. My response:https://medium.com/@vamseejuluri/today-in-hinduphobia-june-10-2019-race-religion-and-paternalism-in-new-york-magazines-sly-e3956b4c37c6?_branch_match_id=626661875877241844 …

Article is really a mixed bag. And the disjointed last paragraph is a very weird shrug of the shoulders

I did not like the article. Her religious beliefs are her business. This article gives the impression she is a member of a cult.

It is a well written piece. The issue with it, in my opinion, is that it stirs towards suggesting that Tulsi campaign is driven by mentioned cult and there is secret puppet master behind all of this which advances secret agenda through her

I have read repeatedly that the article was sourced and even plagiarized from a hate stalker with a personal vendetta against the Gabbard's. The article is very vague about her Hinduism and about the nature of this obscure religious group. I think it is a well executed smear.

Religion is weird. Very easy to target
anyone on it really. And really every family is strange so I have hard time worrying about her religious values. So far her experiences seem to be growing her as a person. She’s taking on so much bad press, she’s either genuine or crazyThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Tulsi Gabbard is slowing building up a following for 2020, helped by conservatives. Those who praise and promote Tulsi are helping her build a following to pull votes from President Trump in 2020. Never trust any democrat, it’s naive to do so.
