"YouTube radicalization" is a notable phenomenon and worth exploring, but the framing in the NYT and other elite media almost invariably ends up tilted in favor of more stringent speech regulation policies. There's a way to cover this stuff without implicitly demanding censorship

technically, but its mostly overblown hype. Most research I've tracked so far shows the inverse to be true https://pyt.azureedge.net/  Even the NYT story talks about how youtube made the dude denounce the alt right and he never bought into far right views

I’ve personally met people who became crazed conspiracy types because they fell down a YouTube rabbit hole. So it does exist. Question is how you frame the issue and what policy prescriptions you implicitly demand. NYT and others want more stringent regulation of speech

It’s just the Video games and Marilyn Manson made me do it argument from the 90s. Corporate Media is just Tipper Gore on steroids, it’s overblown to control independent media. Gatekeepers trying to gatekeep.

so yes, thats a thing that happens. but that doenst always mean its a problem that needs a solution. the number of times these videos have lead to violence is actually not that large & these same folks would still probably have found something else to set them off anyway.

Same could be said about books and libraries. One can fall down a conspiracy rabbit hole in there, by reading books. There were some crazy people before the internet.

Why should anyone *demand* any "policy prescriptions" implicitly or otherwise? If we're going to demand curtailing YouTube influence, are we also going to demand music film and television curtailing? Not merely FCC and parental guidance but the contents themselves...

Solve it by discussing it out in the open. Not by more censorship --- why do you think we have conspiracy theorists in the first place? Could it be the large amount of lies that have been _proven_ false in US history? A certain segment of people don't trust anymore.

Really so they are pushing to take down 9/11 Truther videos, or Illuminati videos? Let me guess, they want to censor a very narrow band of content about political actors they favor.

wouldn't twitter be the number one rabbit hole for the crazed? The people who receive blue checkmarks seem especially susceptible.

This is what happens when all our political and moral leaders lie to us constantly. It becomes easier to believe some youtuber who's making videos for fun.

The trend to rabbit hole YouTube diving comes from all our intense desire to learn the truth about what is happening to our world. When former trustworthy news organizations become propaganda outlets & lie, we are lost. Who to believe? NYTimes =enemy.

Know what other rabbit holes vulnerable youth/ppl fall down: drug addiction, cutting, gender confusion, drinking, sex addiction, pornography, video obsession, suicidal ideation, anorexia, & other risk-seeking behaviors. With all these symptoms maybe there's a societal problem!
