The elite media continues its quest to pressure tech companies into more stringently regulating speech, in the name of combating “extremism” and “hate” -- whatever that meanshttps://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/06/08/technology/youtube-radical.html …

I think elite media is trying to create a moral panic around the existence of "vulnerable young men" -- who have always existed, always will exist, and always will be the demographic most susceptible to "radicalization." Only difference now is they're consuming lots of YouTube

Do you have anything at all to say about the recommendation algorithm or nah? They're literally building deep learning networks to engineer human behavior to sell ads which seems like bigger problematic than racists getting deplatformed. But hey that's just my opinion.

It’s scary!! How did they know I like Counting Crows Round Here? They’re literally picking every single thing I like.

Laura Southern, Gavin McInnes, Stefan Molyneaux, & Paul Joseph Watson all encourage reading.

They watch YouTube because no other medium is meeting their needs, except for podcasts, which also seem to be quite popular. Political books aside (which have never been a mainstream pastime anyway), it is a great time for long-form political dialogue.

It’s almost like the existing mainstream media is trash and has nothing to offer young people to help them access & understand facts.

Just as reading the NY Times will never give one a rounded view of history, events, politics, society, etc.

I have to ackshually this: I see the point about deep thinking but humans are much more adapted to oral learning than to reading. We have to learn to read.

Funny how the trends of "young" people are *always* troubling to "old" people unable to evolve with the times.

If you watch all the right stuff, like the lectures by the Horsemen, you can gain a lot, but you can't watch Howard Zinn. He hasn't got a channel. Neither does Orwell, but the movies aren't bad. It's what they stumble onto first: Youtube garbage. You have to LOOK for good stuff.

Ever try audiobooks? Aural learning can be 2X as effective as visual once one develops that skill over time as imagination is heavily triggered in both.

I agree, reading books is critically important to learning and thinking but at least these youths are not watching TV.
