The elite media continues its quest to pressure tech companies into more stringently regulating speech, in the name of combating “extremism” and “hate” -- whatever that meanshttps://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/06/08/technology/youtube-radical.html …

Obviously young people falling into YouTube sinkholes and developing wacky beliefs is a real phenomenon. But the solution is to create better YouTube content, and advance better arguments. Not purge channels/videos you dislike under the guise of “safety”

It’s also disturbing, as a general matter, how many young people apparently form a political identity entirely by watching YouTube videos. They don’t read. They just watch stuff. That’s never going to be conducive to deep thinking, learning, and/or reasoning

I think elite media is trying to create a moral panic around the existence of "vulnerable young men" -- who have always existed, always will exist, and always will be the demographic most susceptible to "radicalization." Only difference now is they're consuming lots of YouTube

"Combating extremism and hate" is the orwellian phrase that means shutting down the peer-to-peer nature of the internet in favor of the previous, top-down broadcast regime, so that the power structure can regain control of the narrative. Not gonna work.

The demand for outright censorship from the 'liberal' side of media is pretty gross. Without any doubt, after the 'alt-right' is censored, the 'liberals' will go after leftists as well. This moment is a dark stain on elite media.

Here's the video Caleb made: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfLa64_zLrU … Dudes an actor. A bad one. It looks like an SCTV skit or something. Good enough for the smear merchants at NYT though.. who probably paid the dude.

They write about him making the video in the first sentences and could easily have linked to it so we can assess it right at the start. Plenty of other offsite hyperlinks embedded in the text.

I've been consistent on this since I was about 12...seriously...I just INTUITIVELY knew...you DON'T STOP PEOPLE FROM TALKING, you fight ideas you don't like with better ideas. THE ONLY SPEECH THAT SHOULD BE SHUT DOWN IS THAT WHICH EXPLICITLY SAYS: "KILL THAT PERSON/THOSE PEOPLE.

Other than that, we are allowed to say we even HATE someone...you can even HATE A WHOLE GROUP OF PEOPLE if you want...the idea is....someone with better thinking should correct your thoughts...with THOUGHTS. NONE of these people, people like Paul Joseph Watson even SAY THEY HATE

All four of the people pictured there are, indeed, hateful extremists. Your skepticism about the motivations of “The New York Times” in publishing these types of articles — skepticism that I share — would probably seem a lot more credible if you would acknowledge that.

I dunno, they seem to operate pretty well on the edge of the overton window, which makes the "extremist" part dubious. Maybe 10 or so years ago they'd be extremist, but the discourse has changed.

This NYT article is highly coincidental to Maza's YT campaign. Extremism happens on multiple sides, but it seems like there is only media interest in the Right-wing variety.
