My grandpa has Forrest Gump-level WW2 stories, from a ship adrift with no engines in enemy waters during a typhoon, to shooting down a kamikaze pilot, getting thrown in the brig for Irish cowboy behavior, and seeing the surrender of Hirohito from the deck of his ship.

My grandfather fought in N. Africa, Sicily, Italy, Normandy/France, Holland, and Germany. He was always cynical about celebrating it, but then again he was cynical about most things. He didn’t like being recognized, always just said he was doing his job.
