This is ignorant. Trump signed one decent bill, then under-funded it by 80 percent. He also reversed Obama reform policies on equitable sharing, police militarization, DOJ review of local police agencies, predatory municipal courts, I could go on.https://twitter.com/mtracey/status/1134460071084265477 …

It's an incredibly facile comparison of their records. Reform isn't always new legislation. It's also policy. Also, whether the FIRST STEP act lives up to its promise depends heavily on its implementation. And Trump is already short-changing its funding.
-
I'm not contending that Trump is somehow "good" on criminal justice overall, he's bad in the ways you've documented. No argument there. In terms of actual legislation enacted, though, the comparison is still notable -- and supremely ironic on numerous levels.

Your first tweet also makes little sense. How is it "telling" that Biden's competitors/detractors *aren't* attacking the Obama-Biden record on CJ reform? If that record is as paltry as you claim, I'd think they *would* be attacking him for it.
-
Right, it's telling that Democratic candidates are NOT attacking the Obama-Biden record, given how paltry it is. That owes in large part to the political pitfalls of attacking Obama in the context of a Democratic primary. So instead they must go back 25 years for an attack.

This is like responding to Lincoln's Second Inaugural by asking, "but what do you think of war?"

Agreed. Not "ignorant." More like "consciously in bad faith."

I'm not arguing that Trump is overall "good" on criminal justice, I'm observing that he signed into law a bill that was more sweepingly reformative than any bill Obama signed.

This is addressed in Balko’s original tweet pretty clearly, I think.

Michael seems proud of his ignorance, which is why he holds fast to a hot take he doesn't seem to care is extremely misleading. Next he's gonna tell us Reagan was a civil rights champion because he signed the bill that made MLK Day a national holiday.

As someone who admires your work, Michael, I'd advise you to fall back and admit your error. This is Radley's wheelhouse, and you're out of your depth here. Radley has a granular knowledge of EVERY modern president's record on criminal justice and law enforcement.
