It's very possible to imagine a scenario where Trump is damaged by impeachment even if he is acquitted. Impeachment would keep his perceived illegality and behavioral flaws front-and-center -- rather than, say, the economy. You don't need to convict him to inflict political harm

For some reason people only talk about how Trump's "base" would be energized by impeachment. Well, so would the Dem "base," and that base is arguably larger and even *more* activated, considering the historic turnout in 2018. I discussed in this column:https://www.nydailynews.com/opinion/ny-oped-the-runaway-impeachment-train-20190528-jfedgjwbjnegrjxxehrzwx53fa-story.html …

From a strategic standpoint, Warren was "ahead of the curve" on this issue. She read the Mueller Report and called for impeachment right away, while the rest of the candidates equivocated. Any gains to be made by backing impeachment accrued to her. Hence, she has gone up in polls

I'll repeat. Trump supporters who claim they know exactly how impeachment would play out politically are spewing nonsense. Height of arrogance and hubris. Trump won by a thin popular vote margin in three states. The people he needs to win again aren't raging everyday on Twitter

Another thing I wonder is how long Bernie will be able to hold out on directly endorsing impeachment proceedings. At least 4 of his Senate colleagues have already done so. Could be that remaining "ambivalent" on the question will be politically untenable. Starting to seem evasive

Should senators publicly call for impeachment before it reach senate, being jury and all?

They really shouldn't, but that's not necessarily a concern of a lot of Democrat primary voters.

I hope that he has the good sense to say something like "with an election 18 months away I don't think impeachment is a good use of Congressional resources." He could pick up some ground on Biden by being the sole voice of reason in the democratic party.

I don’t see how impeachment proceedings, no matter their merit, cannot help but being tainted by years’ of RussiaGate nonsense and hysterical, false accusations. The media and DEMs who repeatedly cried wolf have inoculated DT against credible criticism for many.

IMAO, DEMs who sign on to impeachment proceedings risk being seen as part of the “sour grapes” cabal who have made it clear from the election on that they wanted Trump out by any means.

Well, if he is smart he would want to win back his supporters who might have moved to trump. May be a reason he isn't polling as high. To endorse impeachment on the guy who made them feel like they were fighting the corrupt DNC wouldn't be a smart move, in my humble opinion

One thing I don't see anyone talking about is there will be selective releases of classified info painting the investigation as politically motivated while impeachment is going on. This will play well with GenX Independents who didn't like the IC power grab in the early 2000s.

It's not about the election, it is about delaying the Trump program, by making him spend time and effort on this fake stuff, so he never gets any of the stuff they don't like done (it's also about grounds for a future war with Russia - these lunatics love war and murder)

The message I’m getting from Washington is this. We HATE the fact Trump beat Hillary. HATE it!! He must go for any reason. By extension we HATE his supporters. Connor Lamb ( my district Pa 18) and other moderates were elected to calm the waters. How’s that working out?

It takes a shrewd tactician and a persuasive pol to play impeachment to his advantage. Bill Clinton did it. Could Trump? Oh yeah. He starts in a stronger position, as he never committed any crimes—but his enemies did. OTOH the MSM is 100% against him, for they were accomplices.
