It's very possible to imagine a scenario where Trump is damaged by impeachment even if he is acquitted. Impeachment would keep his perceived illegality and behavioral flaws front-and-center -- rather than, say, the economy. You don't need to convict him to inflict political harm

From a strategic standpoint, Warren was "ahead of the curve" on this issue. She read the Mueller Report and called for impeachment right away, while the rest of the candidates equivocated. Any gains to be made by backing impeachment accrued to her. Hence, she has gone up in polls

I'll repeat. Trump supporters who claim they know exactly how impeachment would play out politically are spewing nonsense. Height of arrogance and hubris. Trump won by a thin popular vote margin in three states. The people he needs to win again aren't raging everyday on Twitter

Another thing I wonder is how long Bernie will be able to hold out on directly endorsing impeachment proceedings. At least 4 of his Senate colleagues have already done so. Could be that remaining "ambivalent" on the question will be politically untenable. Starting to seem evasive

Both bases are hyper energized from attacking each other all day about nonsense. The people who are going to swing the election don’t care about this. *Not* impeaching, however, risks Dems losing some of their base.

I agree, swing voters, indies and silent voters will determine this election... again.

No,
@mtracy. That the Dem base is more activated is why impeachment would hurt Dems. When your base is already activated, you can't activate them much more. But the same amount of activation could really make a difference for complacent GOPpers.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

We will see, but I don't agree that impeachment favors Dems. A lot of Progressives are still mad as he## about Bernie getting screwed in 2016. How Bernie fairs this time will have a much bigger impact on Dem voting behavior. Many of us(me included)will not vote for a neoliberal.

Never underestimate Dems ability to rationalize pathetic weakness. It's what they do.

arguably larger in blue states. Remember, in the house elections 2018, dems were higher than reps by 12 million in blue states where trump never won. Yet they were only up 10 million nationwide.

I would argue people who vote on party lines will do what they always do and nothing will change that. These are people who would switch from Bernie to Hillary in an instant

"Again, nothing unites Democrats across the spectrum like hatred of Trump." The thing that really gives me pause is the idea of a President Pence taking the oath of office in January 2025.

Democrats still have to be able to explain exactly what Trump's being impeached for. Like Amash, they've been less than specific and Americans remember that Mueller cleared Trump.
