I love how these people feel entitled to proclaim that Assange “isn’t a journalist” even though he has carried out innumerable acts that could only be described as journalistic in nature, such as publishing documents in the public interesthttps://twitter.com/steve_vladeck/status/1133334030831759360 …

The point isn’t that Assange is a journalist (he isn’t), or that his conduct is defensible (it isn’t). The point is that at least part of the theory DOJ is endorsing to prosecute him under the Espionage Act would also apply to—and could thereby chill—responsible journalists. https://twitter.com/HowardKurtz/status/1133326806004699138 …

Luckily, journalism is not a priesthood and people like @steve_vladeck can’t just sit on their high horse and declare anyone excluded from it. The Constitution guarantees First Amendment protections to all, regardless of whether you’re in good standing with academic/media elites

Which is exactly why it doesn’t matter legally whether Assange is a journalist or not—which was my main point, and which is why his case is so important whatever one thinks about him, specifically. But you do you.

You say it "doesn't matter" whether Assange is a journalist yet smugly declare him not to be one, which is "important" for different reasons. Thanks, I will happily "do me."

Yes, I stated my personal opinion while explaining why I don’t think that debate matters legally—and linked to a piece explaining in more detail why this indictment is so alarming. In reacting to my personal opinion, you rather missed the rest of everything that I was saying.

I saw the rest of everything you were saying, yet chose to highlight your smug certitude that Assange is "not a journalist" despite the many incontrovertible acts of journalism that Assange has committed. Your conception of "journalism" is indefensible and incoherent.
