I love how these people feel entitled to proclaim that Assange “isn’t a journalist” even though he has carried out innumerable acts that could only be described as journalistic in nature, such as publishing documents in the public interesthttps://twitter.com/steve_vladeck/status/1133334030831759360 …

The point isn’t that Assange is a journalist (he isn’t), or that his conduct is defensible (it isn’t). The point is that at least part of the theory DOJ is endorsing to prosecute him under the Espionage Act would also apply to—and could thereby chill—responsible journalists. https://twitter.com/HowardKurtz/status/1133326806004699138 …

Luckily, journalism is not a priesthood and people like @steve_vladeck can’t just sit on their high horse and declare anyone excluded from it. The Constitution guarantees First Amendment protections to all, regardless of whether you’re in good standing with academic/media elites

Everyone’s a journalist. There is no difference between free speech and a free press.

They want to go back to the time when "responsible" journalism meant consulting the State Department on what stories it could or couldn't run, or delay until such a time when the possibility of public outrage would be blunted.

The gov't is in breach of the First Amendment if it only protects the people the gov't identifies as journalists. The gov't thinks it can get away with this as they also get away with only admitting 'journalists' to WH press briefings who are 'on message'.

100% of everything Wikileaks has published is 100% accurate & defendable. Julian Assange is definitely the most responsible journalist on the planet. The only way I can find responsible journalists is to scour the internet. What responsible journalists are you ever talking about?

There's a larger point here that it shouldn't matter whether Assange "is a journalist." There should be no legal distinction. Assange should be protected as a speaker and as a publisher.
