The tendency to cast any deviation from contemporary left/liberal consensus as “crypto-fascism” or even outright “fascism” is among most stifling and absurd elements of the hysteria-induced moral panic that we’ve been beset with for the past several years

Orwell observed in 1944 that every political faction in England had accused the other of being "fascist" -- from communists to conservatives. "It will be seen that, as used, the word ‘Fascism’ is almost entirely meaningless," he wrote. Some things never change...

Fascism clearly exists to some extent but the over-reliance on hyperbolic, hysterical language has fostered laziness and stultification. A useful exercise is to try to describe phenomena you regard as potentially "fascist" without using the term; it obscures more than it reveals

But I watched an hour an a half video from a former comedian who went through a definition provided by an "expert" and showed how similar all the people I dislike are to this expert's definition.

Much in the same way that the accusation of "racism" is used willy nilly, people call other people "fascists" not because it is true, but because it is effective.

An opposing side can and will devalue assertions against them (like “fascism”) by simply accusing the other of the same sin. Just like ssserting fake news. This is fairly obvious today.

I wish more people could speak as Australians, instead of ‘left and right.’ (It’s just not right & leaves some people left out. Lol) ... (I seriously do wish that though.) We need more bipartisanship on the big issues, & policy debate, not personal attacks.

Here's what I think it is: A top-down authoritarian structure focused on military efficiency through obligation to serve the state.

the left overuses every bad character label. is misogyny real? yes. but if I, a woman solidly planted on the right, try to point it out, I'm suddenly sjw, feminazi, etc. also, the left ignores blatant fascism, sexism, racism, etc, further weakening their everyday claims.

I think a more useful exercise would be to define a priori elements that be indicative of a fascist movement and then look to see how many of them fit. What would such a list look like to you?
