Pundits love to point out that Trump's "base" (overused term) would be energized by impeachment. OK, but so would Dems' "base." And we know the Dem base is already very energized, as evidenced by massive turnout in the 2018 midterms. Unclear which "base" would be more "energized"

Of course it's unclear. Impeachment proceedings haven't yet been initiated.

And yet I see a lot of confident predictions, especially from Trump supporters, about how it will play out politically.

It's not the base that Dems need to worry about - it's the Independents & they r fed up w/these shenanigans

Energetic “bases” are about 80% of the problem with American politics. Functional democracy requires a widespread willingness to accept half a loaf.

Why would impeachment energise the Dem's base? They already loathe and despise Trump and will do anything to remove him. Why should the arcane bureacratic trudge through the diplomatic records of impeachment make any difference?

It really depends on what he is impeached for. If he is impeached for something related to Russiagate (collusion, obstruction) which has already been proven to be a dud (except by a few ppl in the MSM), it will energize Trump supporters more.

The conservative base is much larger from what I’ve seen. The dem base also becomes less motivated with time. Too many promises of “we have the evidence” and “ we’ll impeach” without success and you lose the personality disordered which is the far left’s biggest group.

I really am not sure that it wouldn't be more productive in the long run to concentrate on winning in 2020. I have no objection in principle of course to impeaching a corrupt president (which he is) but am not sure that is the best way to rid ourselves of him.

It may also energize independents who want the country to address problems and not always be on the "hate" train. If this is the Dem platform along with socialism then my vote will go elsewhere. Pretty sure I'm not alone and the trend is non-party affiliation.

I think not just the Trump base but Reps & Independents would rightfully see it as an Undemocratic attempt to defeat Trump. Instead of winning in a 2020 election. The people pushing impeachment are often the same who pushed Russiangate. The 25th.

It is not euther side's base that is in play here. It is those in the middle who wil swing the election. Whether Dems impeach or continue to accuse w no action, the swing voters will not like it unless there is indisputable evidence of a crime. Not obstruction of investigation.

Considering the republican base was snoozing on enthusiasm 3 months prior to the midterms, expecting a democratic blue wave, until the Kavanaugh gang rape accusation show happened. That energized R voters enough to hold house losses to less than the 60-80 seats expected leading in.
