Sporadic instances of right-wing violence have occurred for hundreds of years. Random violence in general is simply a constant of American life. But rather than deal rationally with this reality, emotional manipulators whip up grand narratives to serve their political interests

Honest question: do you really not see that "sporadic instances of right-wing violence" (lynchings & cross burnings) were instrumental for maintaining white supremacy in the century after slavery?

I don't view organized, coordinated lynchings and cross burnings, carried out by political organizations often with the backing of law enforcement, as falling into the "sporadic" category

Okay, now we're getting somewhere. Racist violence is particularly bad if it has the sanction of the political organizations & the state, right? Now ponder Trump's "very fine people," pardons for war criminals who killed Iraqis & call for border control to get rough.

You're now expanding the category of phenomena under discussion to include random Trump comments, pardon decisions, and immigration policy. That's not what I'm referring to. I'm referring to sporadic instances of violence carried out by individuals or small groups

Do you not see how these "sporadic instances of violence" might be fanned by President & other powerful people given thumbs up to racism & to beating & killing non-whites (also consider Arpaio pardon)? Is that totally inconceivable to you?

Whether individual, sporadic acts of violence can ever be conclusively, causally established as having been "fanned" by a political figure is dubious. People claimed that Bernie "fanned" the violence committed by James Hodgkinson because Bernie was so mean to Republicans.

Wouldn’t improving the material conditions of target communities free resources so they can better defend themselves from right wing violence & other threats? Assume they are in the best position to decide which threats they want to prioritize, not ppl who aren’t being targeted

ok but many of these instances have been committed by people who expressly cite trump as their inspiration...

Arendt in The Origin of Totalitarianism documents the process: the denial of the principle of human rights, removal of protections for vulnerable people, denaturalizations of citizens, dehumanization. We have all this + ICE and 1000 detentions centers. #WakeTheFvckUp

I can definitely see Bernie telling his followers to “Punch ‘em in the face I’ll cover your legal bills... What happened to the good old days when they’d carry ‘em out on a stretcher?” Sure thing. Get off the crack or stop trolling just for the hell of it.

This is so bizarre. We're talking about probabilities and common sense here, not Cartesian certainty. If we wanted to be especially hard-headed, we could claim that no "conclusive" causal link had been established between prevelance of lynchings & non-prosecution of lynchers.

It's impossible to say whether President Trump's loud repeated widely broadcast encouragement to his white nationalist fans to attack people at his fascist rallies and promises to pay their legal bills has contributed to the uptick in white nationalist violence.
