Sporadic instances of right-wing violence have occurred for hundreds of years. Random violence in general is simply a constant of American life. But rather than deal rationally with this reality, emotional manipulators whip up grand narratives to serve their political interests

Threat inflation has always been a constant of US politics. Post-9/11 it was the defining feature of US politics. Russia hysteria has been another incarnation. Shrieking "we're under attack" or "Terrorism!!" because it advances whatever agenda you're trying to promote. Never ends

Honest question: do you really not see that "sporadic instances of right-wing violence" (lynchings & cross burnings) were instrumental for maintaining white supremacy in the century after slavery?

I don't view organized, coordinated lynchings and cross burnings, carried out by political organizations often with the backing of law enforcement, as falling into the "sporadic" category

150 terrorist plots from 1992-2017 alone, not to mention hundreds of murders, countless more assaults, etc.https://www.adl.org/education/resources/reports/dark-constant-rage-25-years-of-right-wing-terrorism-in-united-states …

The ADL has an awful track record on documenting these issues and I don't accept it as an authoritative, independent source of data. Thanks though.

The lengths you will go through and the many pretzel positions you'll take to satisfy your new right wing followers is just amazing.

So when hate crimes increase ~17% in a year, when mass shooters state their intention to start a race war and cite trump’s rhetoric as inspiration, as does the grand wizard of the kkk, they’re all misinformed about their own intentions and goals?

There are large well-organized, heavily armed right-wing groups found throughout the country in nearly all communities. This year alone they’ve murdered 342 people.https://killedbypolice.net/

"Sporadic instances of emotional manipulation have occurred for hundreds of years. But rather than deal rationally with this reality..." Tracey's *argumentum ad sporadicum* doesn't escape the set it purports to reject.

I'm reminded of those "sporadic acts of violence" every time I walk into shul and see that security has been doubled, and wonder if today I'll be asked to die for who I am.

I don't know what you're referring to, but often times this word "rational" is thrown around simply to express contempt for people who simply want social justice. Maybe that's not what you're doing, though. Idk.

It's the red scare of the 1950s but in the opposite direction. They associate everyone in the centre and rightwards with the most extreme elements of the right. On the bright side, when they start employing "red scare" it's usually a sign they're spent as a cultural force.
