My working theory for why people across the political spectrum invariably react to this argument with blithering, sputtering rage is because on some level they know it's true and won't admit it to themselveshttps://twitter.com/mtracey/status/1130096582257512448 …

Every time I say this, "both sides" freak out but it doesn't make it any less true: Liberals and leftists who fixate endlessly on an exaggerated threat of "Nazis" are the mirror image of right-wingers who fixate endlessly on the exaggerated threat of "Radical Islamic Terror"

The hyper-emotionalism with which people invariably react to this argument -- screaming that I'm personally a Nazi and/or a supporter of jihadists -- reflects why the wider discussion around these issues is so blinkered and irrational

A lot of this derives from the inability of people to accept that sporadic acts of violence are commonplace throughout US history, and they'll inevitably continue https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_New_York_and_New_Jersey_bombings … https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_Ohio_State_University_attack … https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2015_Chattanooga_shootings … Threat inflation is just as commonplace

It's as if the human mind can't accept that life can't be perfect. So they waste everyone's time on impossible tasks like absolutely eradicating nazism in order to prove that life can be perfect horrible by ignoring political corruption at home.

Agree. As Americans, the chance of us dying because of random violence, car crashes, or from alcohol abuse - related causes >>>>>>> dying from a political/religious extremist.

It’s not so sporadic. It has ever been made possible by specific and concerted propaganda by elites since reconstruction to maintain economic benefit by pulling whites (especially) to their side over race which allows them to economically and systemic exploit non-whites.

I think your trouble is focusing on "sporadic acts of violence" instead of broader societal problems. No go zones, pedophile/grooming networks, and even mundane but unreasonable demands for accommodation (such as banning dogs at beaches) are a constant stress on the non-elite.

The word Nazi/fascist is thrown around so much it loses all meaning. "Everyone I disagree with is a Nazi" runs rampant on social media.

The party in power is not embracing those attackers like they are embracing the ideology of white nationalism. There is no difference between dishonestly downplaying the threat of white nationalism and openly supporting it.
