My working theory for why people across the political spectrum invariably react to this argument with blithering, sputtering rage is because on some level they know it's true and won't admit it to themselveshttps://twitter.com/mtracey/status/1130096582257512448 …

Every time I say this, "both sides" freak out but it doesn't make it any less true: Liberals and leftists who fixate endlessly on an exaggerated threat of "Nazis" are the mirror image of right-wingers who fixate endlessly on the exaggerated threat of "Radical Islamic Terror"

The hyper-emotionalism with which people invariably react to this argument -- screaming that I'm personally a Nazi and/or a supporter of jihadists -- reflects why the wider discussion around these issues is so blinkered and irrational

A lot of this derives from the inability of people to accept that sporadic acts of violence are commonplace throughout US history, and they'll inevitably continue https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_New_York_and_New_Jersey_bombings … https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_Ohio_State_University_attack … https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2015_Chattanooga_shootings … Threat inflation is just as commonplace

I wouldn't say they're equivalent. Terrorism's effective because it inspires helplessness. We don't worry about car crashes, those happen to bad drivers, I'm a good driver. "Nazis" are similar, avoid rallies, avoid risk. But terrorism? Avoid bike paths, the subway? Impossible.

I know why Muslim extremists in England would throw bricks at men, women and children attending a Tommy Robinson campaign event. What I don’t know is why the police would stand by and just watch approvingly. Actually, I do know, and so do you. pic.twitter.com/5pg5pwLuJ0

Also, @mtracey, just take a moment to reflect on the absurdity of this post. In effect you're saying: "my working theory about why lots of people are angrily telling me that I'm wrong about x is that (1) I'm right about x, and (2) everyone knows I'm right about x but won't say so

I'm tempted to point out logical fallacies like the excluded middle or false dichotomy...but I don't really think that'll be effective.

I just don't agree, in that Islamic terrorism is a real threat. I don't need to list all the high body counts of Islmaic terror even here in the USA. And many plots are caught before they get off the ground, even recently. Just do a google search.

Not lazy, but determinedly contrarian, regardless of how untenable the positions have to be in order to maintain that posturing.

Reacting emotionally doesn't mean you're wrong. Sometimes you're not able to properly articulate yourself, or you're simply a bad debater. This is frustrating to many. The right has made popular this idea that if you're not "rational" and "calm" you've somehow lost the argument.

Truth is, human beings aren't robots, and this mental war that's waged by the right is usually only a contest to see who can break first and show their humanity ie weakness, in their eyes. Being angry or mad doesn't make a person wrong. Consider their ideas, not their emotions.
