This is not an issue I wade into often, but criminalizing abortion even in the event of incest and rape is disgustinghttps://apnews.com/fbae135281e64818946f72cfdb199dcb …

The state forcing a woman who has been raped to carry the child is unconscionable. Before, the rape was a tragedy, and the subsequent abortion was an additional tragedy. Now, the tragedy would just be compounded in a different and more invasive way by dint of coercive state power

I don't often "wade into" this issue because I think it's morally fraught and complex. I'm also a non-theist and don't subscribe to the predominant Christian/Islamic view on abortion. However, using criminal law to force a rape victim to give birth is straightforwardly immoral

I see people claiming that there is in fact an exception for rape and incest. Either every single media report is wrong, or you're wrong. AP: "Senators rejected an attempt to add an exception for rape and incest. The amendment was voted down 21-11"

The bill is also not somehow "temporary" because it's clearly intended to force a Supreme Court case. The only way it can be challenged up to the Supreme Court is if the bill is enacted.

Having been in that situation, I carried the baby to term and placed him with a loving family. They got the baby they'd always wanted and my beautiful baby boy grew up and became a good man. A violent trauma doesn't always have to be a tragedy.

I appreciate your take but it lacks comprehension and respect of the opposing position. How can anyone expect to defeat an enemy that they willfully refuse to understand?

Coercive as in treating the unborn as it does all citizens? I agree it’s a tragedy but the state is only being consistent with right to life for all living humans. Thus, if you consider the unborn a living human

I grew up in a Asian Buddhist culture. Buddhists consider abortion acceptable. I was raised Catholic & anti-A. Also was taught the history of separation of church & state in political thinking. Separation seemed safer so I accepted that my religious beliefs wouldn't prevail.

I agree with all that but I wonder, how often does this really happen? Abortion advocates often cite this rape victim/pregnancy premise but I feel like it's not near as common of a thing to warrants its incessant use as an example. Or is it?
