By the way, I think the anecdote about the hot dog guy must've been from sometime in the 1970s or 80s. My grandpa said one of the most popular toys were these plastic harpoon things that kids bought in droves when the circus came to the Arena. Guy made a killing

The guy, Phil, was able to buy a large house in Glen Ridge, NJ (wealthy area) based on earning a living from selling hot dogs and cheap plastic toys he managed to wrangle in bulk from shippers at the Port. Hard to imagine how that could be possible today

The China problem is born out of American greed. Multinationals export production to externalize costs. Tariffs are the only tool in the box. We can't steal IP from China because repressive regimes cannot produce the kind of people who can create true cutting edge innovation.

Sure they weren't made in Japan back then?
-
Not in the 70's and 80's. People were sick of crappy American made cars and were snapping up Toyotas mid 70's, then in 79 Sony blew us away with the first Walkman. Remember when the Japan juggernaut scared the crap out of everyone?
