Ridiculous and dangerous framing here by the NYT, who continue the bizarre media tradition of trying to slight Trump for being insufficiently hawkish, and daring him to take aggressive military actionhttps://twitter.com/nytimes/status/1127283486942007297 …

That said, if Trump is reportedly so flustered with Bolton and Pompeo for their failed approach to various countries, why doesn't he fire them. That's on him. He could easily have filled his Administration with people who were more in line with his "instincts." He chose not to.

Bolton blew up the Hanoi summit in February with Kim. The Venezuela coup attempt was a complete failure. Increased tensions and provocations with Iran. Pompeo and Bolton are disasters. Trump is ultimately responsible for the horrible personnel he installs

And don't tell me the Deep State is somehow thwarting Trump's personnel choices in every instance. That's a factor with lower-level people, maybe. But the National Security Advisor requires no Senate confirmation. Cabinet positions are almost entirely the purview of the President

This is an example of the cognitive dissonance party members, in this case on the Republican side, always display about the actions of "their" President. A deeper cognitive dissonance is from the electorate continuing the 2Party Duopoly

You don’t think maybe the “Deepstate” has major dirt on Trump, or he knows that if he totally disses the neocons that he’s brought in that they will just JFK him or his family? That’s one of the more likely scenarios, imo. Either that or he’s like a rasslin’ actor - in on it..

I can't buy this. Trump is extraordinarily stubborn in hanging onto his preconceived notions when he perceives a benefit. He just no longer sees a benefit in being anti-interventionist, now that Bush and Obama are out of the picture, and he can't use the issue to berate a rival.

The way I see it, the president is limited by the ability to get them approved by senate. That’s not a walk in the park and the old hawks in the senate seriously limit his choices. The buck stops with the president but acting as if his hands aren’t tied somewhat isn’t fair either

It more a matter of who can be trusted at this point. So many people with decades of experience but will turn on the President at the drop of a dime & sell books based on the access they were granted.

he has a problem getting good talent because of the left demonization of working for trump. So many independents probabaly run from trump, plus he’s a poor leader, in the fact he wants all the glory of positive outcomes and blames others for negative. Comey “soul eater” comment

The wave Trump is riding is “national neoliberalism”, the same elite and the same BS as usual, but with race, sex, and colonial war-mongering made explicit. It’s nice he’s avoiding Syria, but it was always for the wrong reasons. If we get war with Iran, no one should be shocked.

The problem is that with impeachment held as a sword over his head constantly he has to appease establishment Republican factions, many of whom were ostentatiously opposed to him in 2019

There's also the problem that Trump had no political organization or foreign policy relationships prior to becoming president. He has no alternative rolodex (apart from TV personalities) from which to select heterodox appointments.

Not so much the deep state, as the media and Democrats. Anyone Trump chooses is harassed, sued and marked with a scarlet letter. Purposeful tactic being used to make sure he fails.

Trump had to work with never Trumpers at Convention & setting up Administration. I'm surprised he's made it this far and do what he has. Quite remarkable. Dems/MSM doubling down on all false narratives with no regard to their own credibility. They think he's a lame duck.
