Obama is in a unique situation for the 2020 cycle. It's a wide open Dem field, he is still extremely popular in the Party, and theoretically he could be the kingmaker. That's a bit rare for former presidents. GOP wanted nothing to do with Bush in 2008. Same with Clinton in 2000

Apparently some tweeters replying to this don't understand that I'm talking about the Democratic primary race. Not the general election. If he were to endorse a candidate for the nomination, yes, it would be a massive boost. Probably the most valuable endorsement one could get

If you don't think Kamala Harris would give her left arm for Obama's endorsement, you're out of your mind

I wonder if he would retain that popularity if he actually sought to be a kingmaker and influence the race. I wouldn't confuse the personal popularity of Obama with popularity for his policies.

Sure. We may hate his guts for his policies, but the majority of the voting population starts with name recognition, sentiments, and reminiscences. Obama’s primary endorsement would be the most influential (unless Carter is interested, but that’s more a head turn than a boost).

To quote another notable Chicago politician - "I've got this thing, and it's fucking golden." The longer he waits and builds anticipation, all the better for his brand. I'm sure has a PR team working to make the roll-out of his endorsement the biggest event in politics.
