I'm all for seeing Trump's tax records, but I'm confused as to why it's being portrayed as new or surprising that he endured major financial turmoil in the late 80s / early 90s. Everyone has known this forever. The tabloids covered it breathlessly at the timepic.twitter.com/uQnRMGcNji

Trump wrote a book about the turmoil and incorporated it into his (largely phony) public image. In the first episode of The Apprentice, Trump said: "About 13 years ago, I was seriously in trouble. I was billions of dollars in debt." So... yeah. None of this was really hiddenpic.twitter.com/fnGvWlChuN

The oligarchy has to keep as many of the 99% distracted with these meaningless dramas. Imagine if all of us peasants woke up & realized what’s really going on. 😳

Um, 1990, when this was all news - I remember, I was here in NYC then - isn't 1985. To be losing money in NYC real estate and AC casinos in 1985 took some doing. Or was it all, as the President claimed this morning, just tax fraud?

There are people out there in his base who have no idea what he did or who he was pre-"The Apprentice". And they believe that the show was real. I've always said nobody who followed him or his exploits for the last 30 years could possibly have voted for him.

Totally agree, this was a big New York story but not so much across the nation. The other thing is many of those (like me) who may have seen it but forgot over a 30/40yr span. Then, there have been lots of people born in that time, who would not be aware of this story.

Media can portray this as a surprise and get away with it because we don't value history as a culture... don't read or talk about it enough. 80s and 90s is ancient history for most people.

There was a huge recession in ‘90. Trump’s losses date from the mid-80s when real estate was booming.

He overextended, and then paid a price for it. NYC went bankrupt, and is close again. Just wait until the next r.e. downturn.
