Marcy Wheeler, also known as @emptywheel, appeared on a panel today at Columbia University and shed additional light on her decision to voluntarily hand over a source to the FBI. I was so honored to be able to ask her a question. Here's the exchange:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zkkl_RbCKig …

Anyway, I could not be more happy that I never went to "journalism school," which has always been a complete racket. Here's the estimated cost of attending the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, per Columbia's own estimatepic.twitter.com/VVJvbxvleG

I should clarify that
@keithgessen did ask Ben Smith about tangential aspects of the Cohen story but didn't address the core "debunking" -- meaning that the reporters stood by the story for almost 5 months and didn't admit it was wrong till last week. Should've been more preciseShow this thread -
It also wasn't addressed that Smith publicly defended the story on numerous occasions after it was obviously untenable (including on Fox News with me) and it was only after the Mueller Report was issued -- four months later -- that BuzzFeed effectively retracted the story

Nonetheless, I should have been more precise in my characterization.

My basic problem with this panel (and with media chatter post-Mueller Report more generally) is that none of the questions posed were premised on the media having done anything wrong. Rather, it was almost self-congratulatory. This was an epic fiasco and they won't acknowledge it

Ultimately, accountability is never going to come from within these insular elite spheres. They require non-accountability as a self-defense, and self-sustainment mechanism. It will have to be imposed from the outside. They’re just too far gone

I’m confused. Do you mean the story about Trump telling Cohen to lie? I asked him about it twice—some variant of, what was it like to get corrected by Mueller? And he answered. Is there another Cohen story you’re referring to?

You didn't ask about the fact that it has now been definitively debunked, and that the reporters stood by it for almost five months before finally admitting it was wrong last week. So you asked about tangential aspects of it, but not the core issue of the "debunking"

Dressing down Ben Smith might come with career impact on his students. Ring kissing shouldn’t shock.

Do you really find it incredible? I don’t. Just look at the summation of journalistic integrity on the panel. Zero!

It's almost like some journalists have become self serving political hacks who protect their own rather than report the truth.

Serious question, WTF is she talking about when she says she went to the FBI first because they were going to go after her readers? Sounds like a medication issue.

If you'd gone to journalism school Michael, you'd know that American Journalism is about civility, not the truth.

Would this
@keithgessen be related to rabidly anti-Russian Russian lesbian Masha Gessen? Conflict of interest, much? Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
