Journalists keep tweeting old clips of Biden that are supposed to be damning. And while some are relevant, I just don't think they'll be that politically useful. Obama picked Biden and washed all his past "sins" away. To challenge him, you have to challenge the Obama/Biden legacy

I did a lot of canvassing in 2008 (in a non-journalistic capacity) and I distinctly recall many older, largely white voters who had reservations about Obama deciding to vote for the ticket in part because they liked Biden. Politically, he was a very effective running mate

I'm hearing stuff like, "the people voted for Obama, not Biden." That's just not true on multiple levels. For one, the people elected Biden twice as VP. He was on the ballot. More abstractly, a non-trivial amount of Obama's appeal with the electorate can be attributed to Biden

By historical standards, Biden was also a uniquely active and visible VP. He was party to many of Obama's major decisions. He became a pop culture "icon" in his own right. Which is all just to say: Biden is popular because of Obama. That's why the old clips won't really resonate

Hillary was also a key player in Obama's administration yet his penumbra was not enough to put her in the White House, even though he had 55% job approval at the election. People recognized her association with him but also saw her for her own strengths & shortcomings.

What is this? 10 reasons why Joe Biden "resonated" during the 2008 primary?☝️😜.

I agree with most important conclusions, but not with your reasoning. It's more a matter of the Establishment machine still being able to deliver votes from the core demographics than anything appealing about Biden as an individual. Any hypothetical Obama VP would do as well.

Biden is a non-entity, a blank slate. Which is a perfect match for Machine politics.

I don't think anyone focused or much cared about Biden. It could have been almost any one as VP for Obama. The past will not make any difference to the D or R faithful, but Biden's past may make a big difference to the 20% in the middle

Biden is going to lose votes on the left. There are people who held their nose and voted for Hillary for whom Biden is a bridge too far. Maybe it won’t matter, but it’s not going to be until Election Day that we find out.

The usual dynamics are no longer applicable this election season. Because over the next 18 months, the Obama/Biden legacy is going to be destroyed by SpyGate.

shouldn't Joe B have to be able to distinguish between Maggie Thatcher and Theresa May? just asking 'cuz he screwed it up last night. he's not the clearest thinker, i'm thinking.

You're right to a large extent, but people also understand that Biden as VP was carrying out Obama's agenda, not his own. And it could be argued Obama embraced him without full knowledge of the details of Biden's history, which long predates the Internet.
