Journalists keep tweeting old clips of Biden that are supposed to be damning. And while some are relevant, I just don't think they'll be that politically useful. Obama picked Biden and washed all his past "sins" away. To challenge him, you have to challenge the Obama/Biden legacy

I did a lot of canvassing in 2008 (in a non-journalistic capacity) and I distinctly recall many older, largely white voters who had reservations about Obama deciding to vote for the ticket in part because they liked Biden. Politically, he was a very effective running mate

I'm hearing stuff like, "the people voted for Obama, not Biden." That's just not true on multiple levels. For one, the people elected Biden twice as VP. He was on the ballot. More abstractly, a non-trivial amount of Obama's appeal with the electorate can be attributed to Biden

By historical standards, Biden was also a uniquely active and visible VP. He was party to many of Obama's major decisions. He became a pop culture "icon" in his own right. Which is all just to say: Biden is popular because of Obama. That's why the old clips won't really resonate

Especially the 18-34 year olds he screwed over for the last 30 years... This is all true, but Biden is in fora world of hurt due to his warmongering, student loan push, and other corporate cash grabs against the public.

People care seeing a politician running for president pushing for war, cutting social security etc. just those two things are a deal killer for everyone I know at least one of them no matter if the person is Republican, Dem, Ind. Nobody besides the very rich want to cut it.

The party has moved leftward and these clips are a stark contrast to that shift. How seriously vetted was he for VP anyway?

Can you imagine actually being excited about Biden? Some of us actually want to be led by a decent and intelligent person. I'd take Yang/Tulsi or Tulsi/Yang in a heartbeat with Bernie/Tulsi Tulsi/Bernie being my second choice. (I'm sick of leaving failed states everywhere.)

This all may be true, but there is something current that is also true. See if this clip demonstrates it. He is too old. Anyone who has seen a parent’s mind deteriorate will know what I’m talking about. It’s happening to him.https://news.grabien.com/story-old-man-joe-biden-slurs-his-way-through-first-speech-preside …

Biden is probably a bait-and-switch for Hillary. How could anyone watch the videos linked above, and not think it is cruel to put him out there. What I hear is some kind of aphasia, transient ischemic attack or mini stroke.

That's a persuasive point, the only problem is that as running mate, Biden wasn't under the microscope the way he will be as pres candidate. I can't help but remember him being perennially hapless. But you may be right. He will be tied to the dismal memory of Recovery Summers.

I love “perennially hapless.” He was obviously some kind of P.R. guy/greeeter/congratulatorand and dozens of incriminating pictures show he fucked that up. He never came off as a leader. He came off as innocuous comic relief. Like Andy Divine in old cowboy movies.

And with that, you get "but he was powerless as VP." The reality is that young people don't know who the heck he is/was. Older people are already in the tank. Convincing older people that Obama was bad is untenable. Educating younger voters is not.
