      There's very little downside to running. Rubio may have looked foolish in 2016, but now he's a powerful Senator with influence in the Administration. Christie has major star power and sold tons of books / has lots of lucrative gigs. The basic incentive structure encourages this

          Side note - one good thing about twitter is being able to interact & have conversations with people you wouldn't get to in real life. It's not all bad here
