Please understand that most of these people see running for president primarily as a branding and business opportunity. George Pataki didn't run in 2016 because he had any expectation of winninghttps://twitter.com/nytimes/status/1120281746367496192 …

There's very little downside to running. Rubio may have looked foolish in 2016, but now he's a powerful Senator with influence in the Administration. Christie has major star power and sold tons of books / has lots of lucrative gigs. The basic incentive structure encourages this

Al Sharpton ran for president in 2004 (with the surreptitious assistance of Roger Stone). That's right, Al Sharpton. And he ably marshaled that into a large media platform + outsized influence. Because in terms of branding, you can't ask for anything better. Very nutty system

AND it will provide the DNC with the opportunity to put Super-Delegates back in play, for the 2nd round of voting, so you can be sure they're encouraging it.

Do you think a candidate like Buttigiege that takes off changes gears to thinking he can win? Or still sees it as a branding thing?

There's a changing of the guard on the left and they all see the opportunity to insert their names into a group of party leaders. Though, the most a majority will accomplish will probably amount to nothing more than a flimsy book deal.

Way too many Dems have entered the Presidential race. Pockets of people fundraising & talking smack about the other copious candidates can only result in even more in-fighting. Also, Dems care way too much about who the Presidential candidates' parents had sex with. So bizarre.
