I wrote a column for @NewIndianXpress on how failure to hold accountable bad media actors complicit in the Iraq/WMD debacle -- such as @jonathanchait, @JeffreyGoldberg, and @davidfrum -- enabled them to perpetrate the Trump/Russia debacle years laterhttp://www.newindianexpress.com/nation/2019/apr/15/how-the-us-media-failed-in-russiagate-1964457.html …

US publications are unwilling to engage in self-reflection because almost all of them were intensely complicit in the failure. That's why it'll take foreign and independent media to conduct the kind of thorough, painful audit that is so desperately needed.

I would also note that journalists have professional/social incentives to not criticize one another too harshly. These people are notoriously petty and remember any slight for years. One unkind word and your career prospects could be toast. That's why the whole system is screwed.

When media funded by emerging foreign powers start to have significant influence on public discourse in US (the way Western-funded media has had on discours in other countries for years) you'll see how genuine the self-proclaimed commitment of US to freedom of expression is.

Except what you said is not remotely true about Chennai or India. Indians are obviously much more interested in Indian politics. There is an international section is most papers and US politics is also covered as part of that.

Corporate media in the US seems to be all about controlling the narrative now. Discussion of their failures would reduce their effectiveness.

I remember in the early Bush years when the cool liberal thing to do was say that Americans are too parochial and should read more foreign news. Now if something from overseas is spread on Facebook it's literally Pearl Harbor.

Yeah I had to publish my brilliant new piece "New York Times is Poop and Pee" in the Daily Bangladesh. NYT wouldn't take it. Clearly I should infer from this that NYT is indeed poop and pee, just as I argue in the piece.

Let's outsource all US "publications" to intelligent, professional people like those.
