It is an additional way to demonise Mr. Assange. Connect him to an adversary/enemy.

Not just the media. I've already encountered more than a few vindictive people here on social media, that claim to want Assange prosecuted for "principled" reasons. Then I look at their profiles and see unabashed belief in the Russiagate Hoax. It's sad, but not quite surprising.

Still, in light of everything, it's interesting that they haven't indicted him in relation to 2016. Is this tacit exoneration?

The media will spin, as always. Assange actively conspired directly w/ Manning in 2010 and assisted in uploading secrets onto the Wikileaks site. Manning uploaded 4 databases that contained about 750,000 documents, including battlefield reports and State Department cables.

Fully expect the media narrative to coalesce around the opposite of what the Trump admin does. If Barr prosecutes Assagne the media will either go to the defense of Assagne OR claim Trump is trying to silence him to keep him quite about muh Russia.

Just had someone tell me this was a good thing because 'Assange is a tool of the Kremlin' to which I rolled my eyes and reminded him that that conspiracy theory was recently debunked....

I disagree, because Hillary has always hated Wikileaks and that influenced how Assange reacted to her. This hatred of Wikileaks was a factor in why she lost, and the entire Russia hysteria, with its narrow focus, was drummed up because she lost.
-
Blaming Wikileaks, rather than Russia was too problematic, because it would force them to deal with too many difficult questions like the convention corruption, speeches to Goldman Sachs, past undying love for Wikileaks, and the like. Easier to shout RUSSIA!

Here's Matt Yglesias (now posturing as a great defender of the press) peddling Russiagate conspiracy theories-repeating the CIA line that Assange was used by Russia as an intermediary.https://www.vox.com/2018/6/11/17438386/trump-russia-collusion …
