Michael's basic argument is that unless the maximalist argument (i.e. Steve Bannon execute for treason, a la Louise Mensch) is proven, then there's nothing of value in the Mueller investigation. That's pretty obviously not the case.https://twitter.com/mtracey/status/1113533994644250624 …

Trump has been surrounded by scammers and crooks for his entire career, so of course the Full Mueller Report will contain embarrassing info. But the whole point was to uncover a treasonous conspiracy. Absent that, the entire thing was a fraud no matter what incidentally comes out

My basic argument is that the Mueller investigation was launched on the basis of a purported conspiracy that took place between Trump and Russia. Having found no such conspiracy, the investigation was launched on false pretenses and was thus a fraud.

There was no discernible crime being investigated. The FBI investigation was launched on false pretenses. It was predicated on a fraud.

Huh? The crime that was being investigated was the possibility that people with the Trump campaign, with or without Trump's knowledge, conspired with Russian agents in the latters' activity to influence the election.

And what was the basis for suspecting that such a crime occurred? Nothing. It was predicated on nothing but wild fantasy. A fiction.

The task the special counsel was given was to investigate 'collusion' which is not a crime. That much is true. Based on what I've read that's never happened before. However, Mueller instead investigated criminal 'conspiracy' bcs 'collusion' has no legal meaning outside antitrust.

AFAIK, the special counsel's task was to investigate Russian interference in the US election (hence the indictment of 13 Russian agents/assets) and the possible role of people within the Trump campaign (not necessarily including Trump himself) in aiding such interference.

Leaving aside the fact that’s a ludicrously incorrect statement—computer hacking and bribery are serious crimes, and Trump’s involvement with both were credibly alleged—the FBI is the lead counterintelligence entity in the IC. They were 100% doing their duty.

hacking the DNC, etc. is a crime. it's not totally insane to investigate whether the main beneficiary of that crime was somehow aware or involved, esp. when there are individuals on the campaign who raised red flags wrt foreign influence/connections.

I thought Mueller's primary charge was a counter-intelligence investigation, not a criminal one. He did wind up charging many people with crimes, and has concluded Russia did interfere. So that alone justified the investigation.

Yep. The Russia hysteria provided a useful cover for investigating Trump’s past to embarrass him and damage him politically. Unless we want all future presidents to have their pasts investigated with special counsels, this whole fiasco should be troubling.

The investigation started as an obstruction of justice case when Trump fired Comey. It was a Republican investigation run by Republicans initiated because a Republican president fired a Republican head of the FBI. For Republicans to call that a fraud makes no sense.

One weird thing about this whole Russiagate phenomenon to me has been the use of the word 'collusion' rather than 'conspiracy'. Collusion is legally meaningless. I'll bet $ that 99% of all uses of the term 'collusion' in the history of the NYT have appeared in the past 3 years.
