I'm not saying the claimed totals are automatically legitimate or don't warrant closer scrutiny (although if the NYT had such concerns, it shouldn't have phrased its top-line tweet this way). Just saying the figures could be reflective of support that is not evident on Twitter

Also don't think it's necessarily suspect to wait till Monday to announce the numbers. (He announced the campaign on a Thursday.) That's a pretty common tactic to "drive the news cycle." Also, Beto apparently hadn't even hired a campaign manager yet when he announced

So, I’m going to make a reasonable assumption here and say that his donor base is primarily wealthy corporate Dems.
-
It would only take 2179 people maxing out at 2800 to reach this, if my calculator works. Without the amount of donors, nothing interesting is known.

Indeed; it will be interesting to see the number of donors that got him there!

An oil friendly democrat will never have a hard time raising money, wing a primary is another story.

This also doesn't mean he raised $6.1M from 220,000 people like Sanders said he did! Beto is polling in single digits. A poll that came out after he announced had him at 6% for Wisconsin. He is the Jeb bush of the Dem party!

Yeah. I don't buy it. It's not just Twitter. It's every goddamn poll I've seen, and he represents nothing.

"Mr. O’Rourke’s aides would not say what their average contribution was or how many total donors contributed." "Sanders team announced ... about 24 hours into his official campaign -- that over 225,000 people had donated a combined $6m... the avg donation was $27." hmm
-
They were announcing every few hours during the first 24 hours how much the campaign has raised. You have somebody who did not want to mention how much he raised on Sunday but decided to come out with the number on Monday?

There's no way this isn't astroturfing.

This is probably the most center-right positions I've ever heard you state. 1 person raises $6m in 24 @ $27/person from every single state and is wildly supported (and derided) "on Twitter". The other throws down a smoke bomb and tah-dah... $6.1m, and still has no popular support

Beto is a joke and I would 100% donate to keep him in the race for the lulz.

I didn’t see ‘from small donors’ as a claim. And is 6.1 million conveniently superior to Bernie’s 5.9 million?
-
That they’re so careful to say ‘online’ (um, who writes checks? - so not roles of dimes in the mail?) and emphasize ‘50 states’ makes me think they would have said ‘small donors’ if it wasn’t going to bite them later.
