Frequently amazed by the extent to which US elites remain attached to their college affiliation well into adulthood, and try to leverage it for cultural/professional prestige. Definitely emblematic of the same careerist, social-climbing sickness that led to today's fraud bust

Michael: On a positive note, in my current industry (construction/electrical) your "sheep skin" doesn't matter if you can't perform. (No degrees hanging in offices for "show"). It is refreshing. Knowledge. Skill. Results are the metrics. Built stuff must "work". That simple.

The real scandal isn’t all the unethical shit rich parents will do to keep their failsons and faildaughters from tumbling down the socioeconomic ladder — it’s that we use adolescents’ test scores to ration economic security in the first place. http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/03/college-admissions-bribery-scandal-felicity-huffman-loughlin-analysis-explained.html …

On the one hand we have working class kids being tested constantly for school improvement ratings. On the other, we have 1% parents buying admission for their kids into elite universities. #collegescam

After a person receives their Blessing from Academia, they become a Prophet in the Modern Religion known as Institutions. Dunno ‘bout you, but I’d sure be niggardly about giving up key parts of my identity, notably if they pertain to my continuing success as an authority figure.
