Liberals love to profess how opposed they are to mass incarceration (with good reason) but the moment someone they hate politically gets a relatively lenient sentence, they start screaming for more punitive incarceration. As if four years in federal prison is just a cakewalk

giving lighter sentences to white collar crimes, something we already do and hasn’t done anything to stop mass incarceration

Christ, *equitable* punishment would get me damp as a cellar, I don't think it's bloodlust

"Won't someone think of the rich people who already get punished to hard and often for their crimes. If we want to end mass incarceration of the mostly poor we should focus on them" Lol

A person who bought 3 ounces of weed has had a less deleterious effect on society than Paul Manafort propping up torturers.

The rage is about people of color being thrown in jail for having weed on them. Not really the same as financial crimes which no one has ever complained receive too harsh of a sentence.
-
Sooo. You want lighter sentences for your perceived allies but harsher ones for your perceived enemies. Pretty much exactly what

James Q. Whitman has written about US’s unique punitivity, even for white-collar crime. https://global.oup.com/academic/product/harsh-justice-9780195182606 …

I like most of your takes man, bit this time your just wrong. We can fight and advocate for less jail time for low level offenses and poc in general, while also pushing for rich people who are life long criminals to get more jail/prison time. This isn't an either/or situation.

It wonders me why there is no equivalent word for “shadenfreude” in English. Some wise folks learned long ago that such indulgences of revenge are bad for all, especially the innocent. I hope we will remember Mercy in all we do,think and pursue.
