Bernie’s equivocation on Venezuela is damaging because his hallmark is consistency. Nobody seriously thinks that validating a Trump Admin regime change scheme is consistent with his prior beliefs. He once held events with Chomsky inveighing against US policy in Latin America

Put another way: There’s an active US-directed regime change operation currently underway. For Bernie to do anything less than straightforwardly condemn this is obvious equivocation, and inconsistent with his prior beliefs.

Aid-gate is a sideshow. the real story of all of this is the lack of latin american voices being presented from either the left or right

True, but he didn't call for accepting aid tonight. Called for international oversight of elections. WHich wasn't great but very strong on also asking why aren't we doing this with Saudi Arabia? I thought he was brave. Could've been stronger, yes..

I agree with the criticism but I think people are being too hard on him. His answer was consistent with his overall philosophy: condemn Maduro for his authoritarian tendencies but oppose any regime change intervention. He even hesitated to call him a dictator. 1/

It's fair to criticize US humanitarian efforts as sneaky regime change & Bernie for echoing them but he legitimately believes in free elections & humanitarian efforts in Venezuela. I think the important thing is that he's firmly anti-regime change despite the pro war consensus.

Victory over purity my friend. He probably helped himself on balance. You will vote for him if he’s the nominee.

Play this out for me. How would humanitarian aid actually overthrow the gov't? Instead of destroying the trucks, Maduro's forces could just inspect them, if the concern is smuggling. Otherwise, I don't get it. How does it help Venezuelans to oppose this?

Do you think Maduro's regime is legitimate?

While true...I don’t see why you admire the man. This singular view isn’t the problem I see for your admiration...but his endorsement of Fidel and murderous dictators in general. As a reader of yours who admires your independence may I have a response to that?
-
Not speaking as to intervention or regime change in general..just his avid worship of the most brutal dictators in history
