Having watched or listened to just about every Andrew McCabe interview this week, I don't get the sense that he is lying. I *do* get the sense that he is thoroughly ensconced in the prevailing ideology of the security state, and *that* is what impelled him to act against Trump.

McCabe's problem is that he doesn't perceive being ensconced in the ideology of the security state as reflective of any "political" bias. To him, political bias could only mean partialness to Dems or GOP, in a narrow partisan sense. He thinks of himself as an objective arbiter.

What's the nature of that ideology? Well, it's complicated. There's actually an entire literature which seeks to describe it. "Institutionalist" is one word; belief in the eternal nobility of the American governmental system. And crucially, in his case: heavy anti-Russia animus

McCabe worked on combatting Russian organized crime in NYC earlier in his career, so that informed his deeply-held and likely exaggerated suspicions. But it's a common bias, deriving from Cold War paranoia. Recall, James Clapper said Russians are "genetically driven" to deceive.

In sum, it's a mistake to reduce his actions, along with Rosenstein and other like-minded anti-Trump officials, to simple partisan hatred or personal disdain for Trump. As usual, it's more complex story. As I discussed in greater detail in this column:https://www.nydailynews.com/opinion/ny-oped-democrats-should-stop-thoughtlessly-cheering-on-mccabe-20190222-story.html …

Addendum: I don't get the impression that he is actively lying on this book tour about the decision-making process that went into his opening of investigations on Trump. Whether he lied to the Inspector General is another matter, and one he has not discussed on this current tour.

Another way to think about it: the normie MSNBC narrative and the normie FOX narrative are both wrong. Gee, that's a shocker

Then why is he lying about Trump’s alleged demand to drop Flynn investigation since Trump was referring to Logan Act violation and not Russian collusion? Trump didn’t know of CH in Feb 2017

Jesus, the title. One can as easily say that folks eroding any inspection are co-signing impunity for criminality for the unitary executive, the most powerful position in the world, which in concert with international autocrats, has a fundamentally reactionary globalized effect.

Yes it’s taken on jingoism & fantasy, but in a world in which I cannot dissolve the FBI or exec branch, I’d much rather they use their energy to investigate power that deceives the public, rather than activists. Doesn’t mean I mistake them for friends. To be wary of, sure.

Had McCabe & Rosenstein acted upon the idea of recording Trump, which they didn't, how is that a coup, and not protecting against an actual threat, since the recording could only result in Trump impeachment or removal via 25A IF he admitted to conspiracy or demonstrated dementia?pic.twitter.com/eAkUUPe449

I think personal disdain plays a part in that McCabe really dislikes Trump’s disregard for the conventions of polite behavior in Washington. He’s lashing out against a boorish arriviste.
