Having watched or listened to just about every Andrew McCabe interview this week, I don't get the sense that he is lying. I *do* get the sense that he is thoroughly ensconced in the prevailing ideology of the security state, and *that* is what impelled him to act against Trump.

What's the nature of that ideology? Well, it's complicated. There's actually an entire literature which seeks to describe it. "Institutionalist" is one word; belief in the eternal nobility of the American governmental system. And crucially, in his case: heavy anti-Russia animus

McCabe worked on combatting Russian organized crime in NYC earlier in his career, so that informed his deeply-held and likely exaggerated suspicions. But it's a common bias, deriving from Cold War paranoia. Recall, James Clapper said Russians are "genetically driven" to deceive.

In sum, it's a mistake to reduce his actions, along with Rosenstein and other like-minded anti-Trump officials, to simple partisan hatred or personal disdain for Trump. As usual, it's more complex story. Addendum: I don't get the impression that he is actively lying on this book tour about the decision-making process that went into his opening of investigations on Trump. Whether he lied to the Inspector General is another matter, and one he has not discussed on this current tour.
