There was nothing I hated more as a kid than being condescended to by adults. Lord knows I'm no Feinstein fan, but rhetorically/stylistically I don't have a problem with how she approached that. Substantively, it's a different question.

Watching the full video didn't change my mind. She told the kid they could take their letter back to "whoever sent [them]." That's not respectful engagement.
-
Would you have preferred if she pretended she agreed with them, and condescended to them? At least she was honest and engaged them on the substance of the matter, as if they were adults.

Ok, but even for an adult “you leave the decisions to me, I just won a big election” is a pretty condescendingly inadequate reply
-
I guess that's how Michael thinks adults should interact with each other.

Totally agree. She treated them as adults, engaged on them on the issues, gave them a copy of the bill offered one an internship. The chaperones treated them like kids And spoke to her differently than they did their own kids. The kids were unfortunate pawns.

Didn't hear her give any reasons for her adamant position-taking other than, "Im older, smarter & more powerful than you little kids & your teacher. Plus, I have grandkids of my own, so.....". My gut ached for those kids.

Using kids to try and make a political point is always pure cringe. Feinstein handled it well imho. And her point that she was open to a discussion but not to ultimatums is a valid concept for those kids to learn.
-
As long as a kid agrees with us we respect their opinion. What if those kids showed up with right wing talking points? All the sudden it turns into "who cares what those dumb kids think."

Then we must’ve watched two completely different videos then because she was nothing but condescending to everybody in that room, adults included.

Hey, I have been watching videos for 30 years, I know what I'm doing. I don't respond to this take of yours.

She responded exactly like that school teacher we all had and didn't like, but later in life, came to think of her as one of the best teachers we had ever had. Fortunately for me, I had several of those teachers.

The only "my way or the highway" I heard was in her word salad. Her tone and demeanor can't be respected. I showed the full vid to my 17 year old Grandson who could care less about Politics, and he said "What a Bitch." That was my unbiased interview. No leading questions.

The pomposity of her privilege was front & center. Now she's paying the too high price of public scorn. To a long term public servant it's sudden death and more so - a tainted legacy.

What was rude is that she implied that they were stupid, that she was smarter and that they should run for senate if they don’t like it. Granted, that’s the same attitude most of Congress has towards their constituents and why they haven’t topped 20% approval in decades.

I thought the exact same thing at the beginning. Then it soon developed into an obscene display of arrogance.

This is exactly why adults needs to stop using kids as irrefutable rhetorical human shields. You simply cannot engage without looking bad - you’re either a patronizing fraud who isn’t taking them seriously, or you’re a jerk who is being mean to the kids.
-
You don’t have kids? Grade school children passionately want to make a difference. Often it’s in the form of cleaning the neighborhood park or pamphleting at the local grocery store. BTW, no parent would allow their child to be used as a front for the voice of others.
