It's irresponsible to not provide a correction/clarification here because her platform is so large, her statements of fact were so unqualified, and there are so many people who rely on her for informationpic.twitter.com/UgGpxEbpDV

Her initial point re mincing words when describing hate crimes is spot on, even if the facts of this particular case are now in question. STILL, the mistake was assuming the story was valid in the 1st place, so shouldn't she wait until things are resolved before commenting again?

Entertainment Tonight was CORRECT to use "minced words" with respect to this incident (AOC objected to the use of the word "possible").

And 99% of the time, she'd be right. In this case, it's the attack itself that's suddenly in question. If the attack is legit, calling it anything but a hate crime seems ridiculous, yet the media frequently glosses over inconvenient labels, however appropriate they may be.

"Possible attack" was the best way to describe this, because the facts were not in and it was premature to draw conclusions, as she did.

I agree with you, but also agree with her point. Based on her specific message, I think she linked the "possible" not to the word "attack" as you're doing but the words "homophobic and racially charged." Just the phrase "racially charged" itself is ridiculous.

Like most of the time, I think your overall complaint, the hastiness in assuming the verdict of an alleged crime and then making public statements based on that assumption, is totally right. I just think pressuring her for an immediate response/retraction is equally hasty.

She could always say "I apologize for taking Smollett at his word, but stand by my initial point about the language we use when describing hate crimes," but I'm not sure how that would go over.
