And 99% of the time, she'd be right. In this case, it's the attack itself that's suddenly in question. If the attack is legit, calling it anything but a hate crime seems ridiculous, yet the media frequently glosses over inconvenient labels, however appropriate they may be.
"Possible attack" was the best way to describe this, because the facts were not in and it was premature to draw conclusions, as she did.
My argument is that most were too hasty in responding, so a hasty response to these new questions is equally wrong. Besides, a staged assault seemed ridiculous at the time whereas now, there are strong arguments supporting either scenario. At least she hasn't deleted the tweet.
