A cabal of FBI and Justice Department officials deciding to oust the president through some arcane constitutional mechanism could easily be described as a coup attempt. Impeachment/conviction is legal. Their cockamamie 25th Amendment scheme was by no means straightforwardly legal

No, you're wrong that it's explicitly provided for in the Constitution. The amendment exists, but there's nowhere near any consensus on whether it would legally apply to Trump's situation in May 2017

The only consensus that would matter would be the that of the cabinet and VP.

The 25th Amendment is for incapacitation of POTUS, period. Because for any circumstance other than that he could just fire his cabinet.

The amendment isn’t there for spooks to settle a score.

"...written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office..." Furthermore, there is a provision for the President to challenge this which is similar to the impeachment/conviction process.

Obviously, the latter provision is so a President who is not incapacitated will be given the same due process as in impeachment proceedings. The whole 25th gambit is a dopey idea that lazy authoritarians like McCabe were hoping would be an easy way out.

First and foremost Trump is #unfit for the presidency of the United States. Secondly, Trump became a asset of Russia via the Russian mafia that he's been working with since the 80s. Third, the 25th Amendment is for #charlatans just like Trump.

I do not follow your logic. They considered an action based on the US Constitution and then did not follow up on it. Also, Trump is crazy. We're in uncharted waters here.

I’m pretty sure that “I don’t like Orange Man” falls short of presidential incapacity. The purpose of this type of thing is to ensure continuous functioning of the republic, not to secure cheap political victory.

It would legally apply in any situation where you could get the VP and a majority of the principal officers of the executive departments on board with declaring the president unable. The section literally says "whenever" those conditions are met, the VP becomes Acting President.pic.twitter.com/Y5xoPfpfYF
