      Michael Tracey Retweeted Reuters Politics

We are witnessing the US attempting to facilitate a coup in real-time, and almost no one in the entire media/political class has anything remotely skeptical to say about it. Shameful, especially given the history of US foreign policy in Latin Americahttps://twitter.com/ReutersPolitics/status/1093992320721141760 …

Exclusive: The U.S. is communicating directly with Venezuela’s military, urging them to abandon Nicolas Maduro, sources say. The media/political class has spent more than two deranged years screaming about Russian Facebook memes and Twitter trolls -- supposedly world-altering "foreign interference" -- but has nothing to say about the US directly seeking to topple a government. Frauds, all of them

I don't understand the parallel here. One's supposed to be subversive, the other is blatant and open. Would you rather we not openly support the people of an oppressive regime. I really don't understand the game plan here.

The parallel would be the interference, although it's clear that the US interference is much more consequential. And if the US actually cared about the well-being of the Venezuelan people, if wouldn't have imposed sanctions specifically designed to undermine the country's economy

Hard to express the rage and grief about this. The suffering we are inflicting and the hypocrisy of those doing it, including those who pose as the progressive left and either remain silent or condemn the Venezuelan government as an excuse, knows no bounds.

Well we’re helping Saudi Arabia drop bombs on Yemen and that’s a bigger humanitarian crisis than this. So should we bomb Venezuela? At the very least you have to admit we’re rather inconsistent when it comes to “who we are.”

It's not just that Russia supposedly kept a girl from becoming president. In fact, that's not the main issue. They thought that Trump (intentionally or otherwise) might roll back the empire a little bit - that's not allowed under any circumstances.

We need to stay away!! Guaido is a socialist just like Maduro. He may be rightfully elected by their rules— but there is nothing about freedom, democracy, or free markets. Just the next socialist in line. Encourage minimal bloodshed—but don’t back him! Hurts pro-democracy groups
