Being Hindu, Hawaiian or a veteran is no excuse for whitewashing the worst systematic mass atrocities since the Holocaust, which are still ongoing now in Assad’s dungeons. It’s not about labels. It’s about @TulsiGabbard lacking the moral clarity to represent America.https://twitter.com/VanJones68/status/1093324238180806656 …

You may not agree with Tulsi on foreign policy. But she has independent, unorthodox views that grow out of her unique experience as a Hindu, a Hawaiian & a veteran. Labels are easy. Listening & learning are more valuable. Even when we disagree, I’m proud to call her my friend.

"Moral clarity"? Really? So the sole possessors of "moral clarity" in this scenario are those who advocated a years-long, horribly destructive proxy war, empowering some of the worst extremists on the planet, and still won't atone for their mistakes?

That’s a straw man argument, which is by definition a fallacy of logic. Tulsi can be morally bankrupt and some of those on the other side can be morally bankrupt too. But I tend to look to the Syrian people who have been tortured by the Assad regime for perspective.

It's not fallacious to wonder why this "morally bankrupt" label is seldom applied to people who took the opposite perspective for 7+ years (probably because it would encompass virtually the entire political class) and only the very few dissenters get vehemently stigmatized.

Maybe it's more accurate to say you are both-sides-ing this and hard. Focus. If someone looks at systematic mass atrocities and concludes the perpetrator is on balance the best option, that's wrong. Morally wrong. Also, terrible policy (which is maybe where you and I disagree)

Do you think Assad poses a direct threat to the United States? Because that was her claim, and her stated basis for denying that he was an "enemy." Which, as you know, is a very common frame of analysis in international affairs.

You are deflecting again. Straw man: Only "enemies" deserve our attention, action, etc. He is an enemy of humanity. In the Holocaust, for years we concluded Hitler was not "our" enemy, while he slaughtered innocents. We should have done more then. We should do more now.

Not a straw man, considering the "not an enemy" point is what precipitated the exchange with Van Jones that you tweet-quoted. Now that you've repeatedly invoked the Holocaust, it's probably time to conclude this discussion.

Assad is a threat to democratic principles in a part of the world where democratic principles are in short supply. We should not condone any leader/country murdering and oppressing their citizens. We sacrifice the moral high ground and lose our ability to influence. So, yes.

That's not accurate. When she refused to identify him as an enemy of the United States, she was asked if he could be considered an adversary. She demurred, and then went on to say that maybe it wasn't him who gassed his own people.
