Because most freight companies lease trucks and allow CDL-A Drivers to drive them. Buying your own tractor is a risk/reward deal. You can make more, but you are on the hook for more, as well.

If you are making 36-40k as an OTR Driver, you should get out. Your annual salary of $40,000 would end up being about $19.23 per hour. That's not even the low end of, say, Safeway Distribution Center in Denver, CO paying ~30 an hour (starting)

This seems to focus solely on California, and include companies that knowingly broke the law at a State Level. How is that a National issue? Most large companies lease their own tractors. You don't make as much, but you are also not on the hook for repairs/bs contracts
